It was initially thought the Blues would not announce their next senior coach until after the season, but people power won the role for Teague.

Foxfooty.com.au reported a month ago senior Carlton players had begun approaching key decision makers at the club calling for Teague to get the job.

Carlton co-captain Patrick Cripps famously threw his support behind Teague when he declared before a game against West Coast, “I’m on the Teague train”.

Port Adelaide assistant coach Michael Voss also interviewed for the job.

Teague follows in the footsteps of North Melbourne’s Rhyce Shaw in getting the senior job after taking over as caretaker.

Teague won Carlton’s best and fairest award as a player in 2004, playing 83 games at the Blues and Kangaroos. He retired from AFL footy in 2006.

He began his coaching career at the VFL’s Northern Bullants, then becoming an assistant at West Coast, St Kilda and Adelaide before moving to Carlton at the end of 2017.
