Liverpool vs Chelsea, UEFA Super Cup 2019 LIVE: Latest updates as Frank Lampard seeks first trophy to restore dented pride

Welcome to FOX SPORTS’ live coverage of the UEFA Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea from Istanbul.

Champions League winners Liverpool and Europa League winners Chelsea go head-to-head in the Super Cup just days after very different opening weekend Premier League results.

The game is traditionally more of a ceremonial game than a competitive one, with teams far more focused on the start of their domestic seasons.

However, given the manner of the defeat Frank Lampard suffered in his first game as Chelsea boss, he will be desperate to lay down a marker by not only beating Liverpool but also claiming his first trophy as a manager.

“I’m optimistic because I believe in the players,” Lampard said. “In terms of the defeat {at Old Trafford] I think you always learn as a manager. The clear lesson for everyone was if you make defensive errors against good teams it will cost you.

“The second message to the players was they did so many good things in the game, in terms of how we played in the game – if you take out the mistakes for the goals there were lots of good things.”

Liverpool, meanwhile, are returning to a city very dear to their hearts in Istanbul with it being the location of their famous 2005 Champions League victory, where they came from 3-0 down at half-time to win on penalties.

“I know about the special importance and what a special place Istanbul is for every Liverpool supporter,” Klopp said. “Of course, 2005 nobody will forget that.

“But we are different people, we are not the same – we are now the team for 2019-20 and that’s a pretty good one as well. Istanbul is always a good place for football.”
