2019 Bathurst 1000: Jones, Youlden crashes headline opening Thursday practice sessions

Three separate incidents have headlined the opening two practice sessions at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Macauley Jones claimed ownership of 2019’s unwanted mark as the first victim at the mountain, and was followed in by Luke Youlden and rookie Jake Kostecki later in the day.

Midway through Practice 1, which was topped by Jamie Whincup, Jones lost the rear of the #21 Team CoolDrive ZB Commodore at The Cutting and hit the wall, mostly with the right rear quarter.

The roof of Jones’ car came ajar in the impact, and a red flag was triggered as he managed to bring the car to a stop at Reid Park.

Speaking after the session, Jones believes the damage to the car was merely cosmetic.

In Practice 2, a high-profile contender became the second to bite Bathurst’s concrete, with Youlden crashing the #9 Penrite Racing ZB Commodore.

The session, a 60-minute hitout for co-drivers, was stopped 20 minutes in after Youlden’s heavy crash at the top of the mountain.

David Reynolds set the sixth fastest time in the car in the morning’s first practice session with a 2:05.2012s best.

At the time of Youlden’s crash, the #9 entry was ninth on the timesheets.

With significant damage to the driver’s side of the car, it marks a significant setback for one of the favourites for Sunday’s race.

Reynolds and Youlden combined to win a rain-sodden 2017 race, and were firming to go back-to-back in 2018 before cramping for Reynolds halted their charge.

Late in the session, rookie Kostecki had a heavy hit in his #56 Boost Mobile ZB Commodore, and came to a stop near The Dipper.

James Moffat topped Practice 2 in the #55 Supercheap Auto Racing Mustang with a 2:05.6619s best, but was just 0.027s ahead of Alex Premat (#17 Shell V-Power Racing Mustang).

Such was the pace of Practice 1, that Moffat’s time would have been good enough for 11th in the morning session.

However, Moffat was nonetheless pleased with the speed in his Tickford Mustang ahead of Practice 3 at 4:00pm AEDT Thursday.

“It felt like we were reasonably competitive most of the session,” he said.

“[It’s] pretty much race trim, which is encouraging for Sunday.”
