Adelaide went down to 10 men after a straight red to Ryan Strain in their A-League opener, as they suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to reigning Champions Sydney FC. But it was a good performance from the Reds, and they’ll be looking to bounce back on the road this afternoon.

For City, their first match saw lots of possession but limited chances, with a less-than-slick showing with the ball in a goalless draw against Melbourne Victory. But City will be boosted by the return of Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren, whose form for the national team – four goals in two matches – will have Adelaide worried.

Here’s what Melbourne City coach Erick Mombaerts had to say about the tight turnaround between matches.

“We want first to play well but also to win.

“So, yes, we have to think about these two games very close – it’s not also easy to play the same team in three days.

“But also we can organise some rotation but not too many, not too many – maybe three, four maximum.”
