Stephen Coniglio rejected big-money offers to leave. His reward is the GWS captaincy

Stephen Coniglio has been unveiled as GWS’ skipper for 2020.

The star midfielder, who penned a seven-year contract extension this season, will take over the reins from inaugural club co-captains Callan Ward and Phil Davis.

Coniglio, who has been a vice-captain since 2017, will become just the fourth Giant to captain the club, following in the footsteps of Ward, Davis and Luke Power.

“It’s a huge honour to be named captain of this great club,” Coniglio said.

“This club is my home and the people here are my family.

“I’ve learnt so much from Cal, Phil and the entire leadership group and will no doubt continue to lean on them for support and guidance as we move forward.

“I’m just so excited by what we’re doing here and where we can build to both as a team and a club and I look forward to leading us into that future.”

The 25-year-old’s 2019 campaign was cut short by a knee injury, with Coniglio watching the Giants’ heartbreaking 89-point Grand Final loss from the sidelines.

He’ll lead GWS out onto the field for the first time when the club takes on Geelong at Giants Stadium in Round 1.
