They say you should never run out the captain but that is exactly what Steve Smith did in the third one-day international against India.
Aaron Finch was run out for 19 in the series decider at Bengaluru as he and Smith both found themselves at the striker’s end.
Smith always seemed hesitant for the single but did take a few steps out of his crease before attempting to send his partner back. It was too late by that stage, with the Australian captain haring to the striker’s end.

Smith dived to make his ground as Ravindra Jadeja’s throw flew in but fortunately for Smith it was off target. Unfortunately for Finch, the throw was backed up and he was run out at the non-striker’s end with ease.
“Australia lose a second wicket courtesy of a mammoth misunderstanding between Finch and Smith”, Harsha Bhogle said in commentary.
“He would be so disappointed”, Matthew Hayden added. “It was yes, no, it was a wait, it was confusion.”
“Finch was furious, it was such a mix-up”, Michael Slater said.
Things almost immediately got worse for Australia from there, with Marnus Labuschagne barely surviving an lbw review before surviving a run out chance of his own at the non-striker’s end.
